Discussion:
mini keg for the fridge

I'm fairly new to brewing with only 4 10gallon batches under my belt
(mostly assisting) and one 3.5 gallon batch that I did myself. I'm
bottling everything so far, but of course I'm eager to sample my brew as
soon as possible. I'm considering some type of mini keg (2.5 gallon?)
for the fridge. I know there are a few out there that take co2
cartridges. Is there any one unit that stands out from the pack?
Recommendations?

Thanks,

Dave

I have a 2.5-gallon keg setup in my fridge. I have two 2.5-gallon
Firestone kegs. The kegs are similar to the 5-gallon Cornelius kegs
with ball-lock style fittings. They are rare and not cheap but show
up on eBay every now and then. They sit nicely on the top shelf of my
fridge along with a 2.5-lb CO2 tank. Check out the Photo Gallery on
my website.

The cheapest and best way to do minikegs are get a 5L minikeg setup.

I checked into all those available this summer, party star and phil's
were pretty much it, since William's doesn't sell theirs anymore. I
recommend, and went with the philtap setup (~$50 off memory) and four
5L minikegs from my LHBS. It works with both horizontal AND vertically
oriented kegs, so its easy to
fit in the fridge.

A more expensive way is to get small cornelius ball-lock kegs. Then
you'd
also need a CO2 tank, regulator, disconnects, and tap line. $$$ and
probably
only justifiable if you plan on using 5gallon kegs too.

I have the Tap-A-Draft system for over a year (bought it from morebeer.com).
I've heard some negative comments about it from some, but so far I couldn't
be more pleased with mine. I like how small it is and fits easily in the
fridge.

I also have the Tap-A-Draft system. I Love It! It is just the right size
for the fridge. My wife doesn't complain. The pieces and parts seem easy
to get. It's easy to clean.

Just my humble opinion.

I like my Philtap/5-liter setup a lot, but don't count on it to do
force carbonation. (Assuming that's what you meant about sampling as
soon as possible).
