Hey Tumbleweeds,

After 23 years, I'm giving up on USENET. My service
runs out on May 10, and I'm not renewing. There are
only three groups left that I read: rec.crafts.brewing
with 2 posts per month. alt.smokers cigars with 2
posts per (good) day. sci.math with 400 posts per day,
but 200 of those are wack-job crackpots and 199 are
pointless responses to the crackpots.

If you're ever in Austin, I'm easy to find and
mi humidor es su humidor y mi kegerator es su
kegerator.

You won't be the first, but you don't have to give up just because your
service ends.

If you're still inclined, you can use the free (non-binaries) service
provided by

http://www.aioe.org/

You just replace your old server with newsfeed.aioe.org in your
newsreader and you're (probably) good to go. I use them and they seem
very dependable -- maybe a hiccup once a year or so.

eternal september also works, mostly (unsurprisingly also non-binary)
and generally gets fixed in a day or two when it goes belly-up.

It still is 100% easier to follow the flow of a conversation on usenet than on
any web page discussion I've ever seen.

I have to agree but it's kind of moot when there is no discussion to follow.

Dang, I was in Boston last Summer just being my
wife's arm candy at a conference she was attending.
I was at MIT in the 70's, so it was a nostalgia
trip for me. (First time back in 35 years.)
But at some point, nostalgia is boring
and I wish I'd have thought of you. We could have
drank Beantown dry of Guiness. Good old Boston.

I am having exactly the same experience. There are only about three
groups I read, and like this one, posts are few and far between. When
my subscription to individual.net expires, I won't be renewing it, even
at 10 Euros a year. For years I have subscribed to support an excellent
Usenet provider. I hate to stop doing that, but I think that Usenet is
effectively dead.

If you want a free provider, I suggest Eternal September.

This makes three votes for Eternal September. I switched at the
beginning of the year after Unison announced they were going belly-up.
It was a seamless transition, it's free, and I've had no problems.

How's their spam filtering? If my current service ever goes belly up, it
would be nice to have a good alternative.

I currently use newsfeed.aioe.org and there's rarely any spam, although I
suppose it's possible that even spammers have given up on Usenet.

I think that's part of it, although depending on the newsgroup there can
be a lot of spam.

My experience with aioe is that I've seen so much abuse originate there
that it colors everything that comes from the host.

I concur. I get no more spam with Eternal September than I got with Giganews.

I should clarify what I said earlier (I were cornfused). Unison is a
*newsreader*, and I still use it. They no longer support it, but it is
still available. It was when they announced that they were going
belly-up I started to look into my usenet set-up. I realized I was
using *Giganews* as my news *server*, which is a paid service. It was
excellent, but it included binaries, which I never use. It was then
that I cancelled my Giganews account and started using Eternal
September for free.

So:
Eternal September = news-server
Unison = news-reader

Seconded...it's what I've been using for a while now to follow this,
comp.sys.apple2, and some other newsgroups (a bunch of which started seeing
more activity in the wake of Slashdot Beta).

Bart Goddard... now there's a name I haven't heard in a good 13 years or so. I used to be one of the mainstay dudes on this forum, a long long time ago. I check in here now about once a year or so when I'm really bored, like today. All's I can say now is:
