Discussion:
White pattern in yeast cake?

My yeast cake as a pretty defined white streak. I'm just curious as to
what it is. I don't think it's a problem.

The recipe: pretty mundane pils made with hops, barley, yeast, and
water. I used a tea spoon of yeast nutrient (gypsum), which could be
the explanation. (I don't normally use yeast nutrient, but I was
brewing in an unusual place and wasn't too sure what kind of water we had.)

Given that it's not spreading and the brew smells good (it's still
bubbling, after being in fermenter for a week), I don't get the
impression it's the infection.

From your description, I had no idea. Then I looked
at the picture, and the streak looks vaguely familiar,
but I can't place it. So I guess I can't be very
helpful, except for the data point that I've seen it
before and I'm still alive.

I wonder if the carboy was exposed to cold for a
short time in the middle of fermentation? Or, since
you "brewed in a strange place", the streak occured
during or because of the move?

That's all I got, except to point out that if one looks
closely, we can see your reflection in the carboy and
you should have tied your bathrobe more securely.

Well, I'll come back for more discussion about it if it turns out the
batch is bad, but for now it was just a curiosity. Quite a pattern to it.

Ah, the cold is a possibility. It's in my friend's basement. We
haven't moved it from there, and plan to just split the batch down the
road. It will probably go into a fridge in the 40s for a month when we
do the secondary.

Ambient when we started was about 54, but maybe we had a cold snap.
Well, luckily, it's a pils anyway. The bubbling from the airlock is
finally slowing a little.

I got nothing to be ashamed of, but I'll let the guy who took the
picture know. :-O

Thanks for the thoughts. Interesting.
