For people who have thousands of dollars to spend but don't want even basic
DIY, the NY Times describes automated systems starting at $1,699 for a 2.5
gallon system:

from-an-app.html

Considering a stainless conical fermenter can be found for around $400, and
even that's an extravagence for a lot of brewers (like me) it's hard to
imagine who the target market for these would be. I guess software
marketing consultants with more money than time looking for something to
decorate their kitchens?

There are a number of these around, at much lower price than the one in
this article. It reminds me of the bread machine fad.

It's mostly geared towards the hipster reddit crowd. They are quickly infesting this hobby and making it something it shouldn't be. But don't call them out on it, they are quick to pounce with mockery.

I wear white socks with my sandals. Mostly because I find
it comfortable, but a swell bonus is the "hipster mockery"
I draw.

Hipster: Oh Gawd <rolls eyes> socks with sandals, I
mean what is even the POINT. Someone buy this
fashion-retard a mirror. And by the way, the sour
IS the new IPA."

Me: Right. Some pink-mohawk boy with a bone
in his nose, a split tongue, 4-inch diameter
earlobes, his teeth filed into fangs, and every
square millimeter of his body covered in ugly
tatoos is "expressing himself", but I'm some
sort of fashion leper because I like to wear
socks? Hold still, twig boy, I'll let you breathe
again when I'm done talking.

And who says this group is dead? We just carry on
really slow conversations.

I'll happily wear my sandals without socks if I can scrape the resultant
goo off and rub it in the hipster's face, then force it to scrub the
sandal clean (I'll wash the foot myself, don't want any direct personal
contact with hipsters.) Ventilation is good, wicking is good, and what
goes on between my foot and a sandal sole without a sock is just nasty.
Also, I'm not noted for giving a FFiaRD about "fashion."

This group goes about as fast as some of my brews. Suppose it might be
time to move the one in primary out - only been in there 2-3 years.
Glass is good, at least at my rate of action some years.

I find the converstaions here similer to making beer in a Karboy. Slow but
with care, and determination.

That's a bit harsh.

My brewing setup is plastic buckets, and a couple of two-by-sixes thrown
over sawhorses for my table. (Gotta share this bench with my
woodworking - can't have both going at the same time, darn it.)
I make due with a lot of heaving bucket's of wort and grain around. Very
lo-tech.

I make pretty good beer.

I've got another friend who did just the opposite - conical fermenters,
pumps, the whole nine yards. Hey his hobby, his wallet.

You know what - he make's pretty good beer too.

I'll drink either of our homebrews any day.

The more homebrewer's the better.

My 2 cents.

Regards,

Mark

I'd really love to have a dedicated cooler for fermenting, but it's a
matter of space -- I'd have to do a major cleanup of the basement to make
it work -- and the hassle of getting one down there. But I'd really like
to be able to do away with the low-tech approach I use now for summer
brewing that involves monitoring a styrofoam cooler loaded with freezer
packs. Some yeasts, it's not really a issue -- S05 is so easy -- but some
won't work right except in the low 60s or 50s and that's no sure thing
naturally where I live except in the colder months.
